Andrea campaigns for a warmer welcome

Andrea  has written to Andrew Jones, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Transport and fellow Yorkshire MP, to ask for his support in a campaign to erect signs on the M62, M1 and A1 welcoming drivers to Yorkshire.

Andrea is campaigning on the issue after she was contacted by a constituent, Kellyann Martin from Morley. Kellyann returned from a tour of Southern England and noticed that, while other counties have a plethora of signs welcoming motorists to their areas, Yorkshire as a whole had nothing similar.

Kellyann said:

“It's not what we deserve, and definitely not enough of a fanfare to welcome folk to God's county!”

Andrea has taken up the cause to welcome those travelling to and through Yorkshire, and is hoping to secure the support of the Minister, who is also Member of Parliament for Harrogate and Knaresborough. Mr Jones is responsible for national roads and Highways England from the Department for Transport.

In her letter, Andrea wrote:

“Yorkshire is known for its warmth and hospitality and it is only right that this welcomes you at our county’s borders.

“As a proud Yorkshireman I am sure you will agree with me that God’s county with its rich history of deserving this greeting.”

She will also be seeking support for her campaign from fellow Yorkshire MPs.

Andrea said today:

“I’m very grateful to Kellyann for bringing this to my attention.

“We Yorkshire folk are famous for our kindness and warmth, and it’s only right that this is shown to people coming into Yorkshire, be they coming to stay or just passing through.

“I urge my fellow Yorkshire MPs to get on board with the campaign so we can speak with one voice and welcome everyone to Yorkshire.”
