Andrea held a meeting to discuss changes to business rates on Friday.
Andrea was joined by Leeds City Council Business Rates Manager, Mark Amson to answer questions about the increase in business rates this year. Questions were submitted to Mark and Andrea prior to the meeting so that they could provide information and guidance.
During a period of significant economic struggle for High Streets a Retail Rate Relief Scheme was put in place when the country was at an earlier stage of economic recovery, this was fully funded by the Government as a temporary measure for 2 years, ending this year. At budget 2016 the Chancellor introduced a package of £6.7billion to support all ratepayers and reduce the burden of business rates from 2017.
Andrea said:
“I was pleased to have Mark come along in person to answer the questions of local businesses, it is important for them to know that they can pick up the phone and tell someone they are struggling, I would hate to see businesses shut up shop because they did not explore all the options available to them.
“I am pleased that the Government have announced a substantial £6.7billion support package from 2017, many of those concerned about rates this year will pay nothing next year. The meeting was a good opportunity to learn there is support available and how to access this, from myself, Leeds City Council, the Valuation Office Agency, the Town Council and Town Centre Management.
“I am confident that by working together we can encourage businesses to stay on the High Street and get through this year, so that they can benefit fully from the new business rates system from next year.”
