Andrea hosted a meeting on Friday about the future of the Siegen Manor Care Home and Day Centre in Morley. A consultation is currently underway on whether the home should close its doors.
Andrea had arranged for senior council officers to attend the meeting so that concerned constituents and local councillors could learn more about the proposals and put their questions directly to the council.
A number of constituents, many with family members living at or attending Siegen Manor, had contacted Andrea to express their fears about the council’s plans. Of particular concern to family members was the lack of alternative local accommodation for Siegen Manor residents, and a lack of clarity on when a final decision is likely to be reached and implemented.
After the meeting, Andrea offered to organise a petition to make the council aware of the key points that had emerged from discussions.
The primary request will be that Siegen Manor remain open. However, if this is not possible, the petition will demand that plans for the construction of a new care home in Morley be expedited and for a commitment from the council that Siegen Manor will not close until the new facility is in place.
t will also ask the council to ensure that Siegen Manor is not ‘run down’ over coming weeks and months. Andrea will present the petition to the Leader of Leeds City Council on behalf of her constituents in the New Year.
Commenting on the petition launch, Andrea said:
I am glad that I was able to facilitate this meeting and give my constituents the chance to meet face-to-face with people who will influence this decision.
"I realise however, that the decision will ultimately be taken by the council’s Executive Board.
"That is why it is so important that residents of Morley are given an opportunity to express their views.
"I would encourage anyone concerned about the future of elderly care in the town to sign this petition and encourage others to do so”.
