Helping local businesses compete with online retailers

Andrea in partnership with the Morley and Outwood Business Association (MOBA) and Statement Retail has invited retailers, councillors and town centre management to hear how Digital High Street initiatives could help to enhance Morley town centre.

Digital is changing how consumers shop. Local high streets have the opportunity to adapt and take advantage of new technologies, to help secure the future of independent retailing in the face of ever greater competition.

Following the publication of the Governments Digital High Street 2020 report, Digital Hubs are being piloted in other parts of the country. These hubs are designed to help local high streets use digital to improve their discoverability and accessibility.

Customers use mobile and tablet devices to research products and shops within a specific location before they leave their home, they like to have the option of Click & Collect and receive offer alerts. The meeting will present simple and affordable ways in which Morley’s independent retailers can take advantage of this. Peter Reed Forrester from Community UK will discuss the benefits of creating a digitally connected town through free Wi-Fi, digital education and training.

The meeting and presentation will be held at the Large Banqueting Hall in Morley Town Hall on Thursday 12th May at 6pm.

Andrea said:

“Independent retailers have a real opportunity to embrace digital not only for the commercial opportunities but also to improve social mobility in the area through education and training in what are, key skills.

“It is brilliant to see independent retailers who have no online presence using social media; the next step is e-commerce. New developments in technology mean it is simple and manageable for traditional high street shops to sell even while they are closed. I would like to see all shops offer Click & Collect and mobile alerts to offers and new products.”
