SAVE OUR CENTRES

It was reported in the Yorkshire Post this week that Leeds City Council are proposing to close two of the youth centres in our area.

Lewisham Park Youth Centre, Clough St, Morley, LS27 8DH
Gildersome Youth Club, 20 Street Lane, Gildersome, LS27 7HT

These places belong to our community and are used by so many really local groups that we must fight to save them. One example of the type of groups that use the centre is the ‘Kids For Kids’ award winning dance troupe, that is ran by Val and Melvin Cust.

Val founded the group in 1982 with the aim of keeping children busy and encouraging them to help children less fortunate than themselves through charity fundraising at performances. From just four dancers and two leaders, the group which meets at the Lewisham Park Community Centre, now has 10 leaders, 62 dancers and a handful of adult fun teams. Val added: “Over the 30 years I have seen a lot of children growing up and leaving the group for their different destinies.

Andrea Jenkyns said, “I will do all can and work cross-party to stop these centres from closing, they really are the lifeblood of our community and are used by volunteer groups such as ‘Kids For Kids’ who have been working hard to support our children for over thirty years.”

“Leeds City Council are stating that they need to save £250,000 per year, but I believe that savings can be made in other areas such as the £505,000 per year that they spend on Trade Union Conveners, or the £2.6m on agency staff for non-frontline services in 2013/14 out of taxpayers’ money.”
