Yorkshire MPs have joined Andrea on the ‘Yorkshire and Proud’ campaign for a warmer welcome for drivers visiting our great county by having Welcome to Yorkshire signs put up on the A1, M1 and M62.
Andrea wrote to the Transport Minister Andrew Jones, himself a Yorkshire MP, after being contacted by constituent Kellyann Martin. Kellyann asked why there was no sign welcoming drivers to Yorkshire on the county’s roads, as with other areas.
Andrea has now secured support from Jason McCartney MP, Graham Stuart MP, Craig Whittaker MP, Rishi Sunak MP, Julian Sturdy MP, Robert Goodwill MP, Kris Hopkins MP, Kevin Hollinrake MP and Alec Shelbrooke MP.
Responding to Andrea’s letter, the Minister noted that there will be a change in the law on road signs that would allow for the use of historic and ceremonial boundary signs such as Yorkshire.
He said:
“We are very fortunate to have such a strong identity within our county, and of course us Yorkshire folk are very welcoming.
“I like the idea of boosting our branding, and the forthcoming changes to the signage regulations present an opportunity. I would be very happy to discuss this further with you.”
Responding to the new supporters and the Minister’s letter Andrea said:
“I’m delighted to have the support from so many of my colleagues across Yorkshire.
“The Minister’s response is very positive and I hope to meet with him in the New Year to discuss how we can make these signs a reality.
